Why spine width goes wrong so often
A cover file is a single flat artboard: back cover, spine and front cover laid out left to right in one piece. The printer trims it and folds it around the book block. If your spine measurement is out by even a millimetre and a half, the fold lines land in the wrong place β and because the whole layout shifts together, your title creeps around onto the front cover while the back cover loses a strip off its edge.
There is no way to fix this after printing. It is also invisible on screen, because a flat PDF looks perfectly fine right up until it is folded. This is the single most common reason self-published covers get rejected or arrive looking wrong.
The formula
Spine width = page count Γ· pages per inch (PPI)
or equivalently: page count Γ caliper per page
PPI is a property of the specific paper stock β how many printed pages stack into one inch. It is not derivable from gsm, because two papers of the same weight can have different bulk.
Then the full cover wrap:
- Paperback width = (trim width Γ 2) + spine + (bleed Γ 2)
- Paperback height = trim height + (bleed Γ 2)
- Hardcover adds board thickness on both sides of the spine, plus a square of 3 mm around each board, plus a turn-in allowance the printer specifies β this calculator uses 15 mm, which is typical.
Pages, not sheets
Page count means every numbered side, including blanks. One sheet of paper is two pages. A 300-page novel is 150 sheets. Books are printed in signatures β folded groups of usually 8, 16 or 32 pages β so page counts are always even and are often rounded up to a multiple of the signature size with blanks at the back. If your manuscript comes out at 297 pages, your printer will make it 300 or 304, and you should calculate the spine from that final number.
A worked example
A 300-page paperback novel, 6 Γ 9 inches, on KDP white paper.
- KDP white is 444 PPI, so spine = 300 Γ· 444 = 0.6757 inches (17.2 mm).
- Full cover width = (6 Γ 2) + 0.6757 + (0.125 Γ 2) = 12 + 0.6757 + 0.25 = 12.926 inches.
- Full cover height = 9 + 0.25 = 9.25 inches.
So the cover artboard is 12.926 Γ 9.25 inches, with the spine occupying a 0.6757 inch band centred on it. Set that up at 300 DPI and you need 3878 Γ 2775 pixels β the DPI calculator will confirm it.
Now change nothing except the paper: the same 300 pages on cream stock at 400 PPI gives a spine of 0.75 inches, over 1.8 mm wider. That difference alone is enough to push text off-centre if you built the file for white paper.

Notice the range: the same 300-page book can have a spine anywhere from 15 to 24 mm depending purely on paper choice. Bulky uncoated stock is chosen deliberately by publishers who want a slim book to look substantial on a shelf.
Spine text: the rules nobody mentions
Text running down the spine has constraints beyond simply fitting.
- Minimum page count. Most print-on-demand services will not accept spine text below about 79 to 100 pages, because the spine is too narrow to print on reliably. Below roughly 24 pages, perfect binding is not possible at all and you need saddle stitching instead β a folded and stapled booklet with no flat spine.
- Safe margin. Keep at least 1.6 mm (0.0625 in) clear on each side of the spine text. Binding equipment has a tolerance, and a spine printed a hair off-centre will clip type that runs to the edge.
- Direction. In English-language markets, spine text reads top to bottom, so the title is right-way-up when the book lies face up. Most of continental Europe runs it the other way. If you are printing for multiple markets, follow the convention of the largest one.
- Colour across the fold. A hard colour change exactly at the spine fold will look misaligned even when the trim is perfect, because binding tolerance is typically Β±1.5 mm. Either extend the spine colour a few millimetres onto the covers, or design the whole wrap so no critical edge sits on the fold.
Hardcover is a different problem
A case-bound hardcover spine is not the thickness of the paper block. The boards add their own thickness on both sides, there is a hinge gap where the case flexes, and the printed case wrap needs a turn-in allowance that folds over the board edges and glues to the inside.
Typical greyboard for trade hardcovers runs 2 to 3 mm per side. The hardcover mode above adds your board thickness twice, a 3 mm square around each board, and a 15 mm turn-in on all four sides. That produces a realistic working figure β but hardcover construction varies more between printers than paperback does, so always download your printer's template and check your artwork against it. Treat our number as a planning estimate for laying out the design, not as the final production spec.
